How to treat nits & lice

head lice nits treatment for children in nursery school

The likelihood of nits and lice being discovered in the hair of young children is very high, so don’t be shocked if it happens to your child or happens at the nursery school your child is attending. It is quite easy to treat if you just follow these instructions.

Treating a child with nits (lice eggs) involves a few key steps:

  1. Confirm the Presence of Lice: Check the scalp, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. Look for live lice or nits attached to the hair shafts.
  2. Use a Lice Treatment: Apply an over-the-counter lice treatment, such as a shampoo or lotion containing permethrin or pyrethrin. Follow the instructions carefully.
  3. Comb Out Nits: After treatment, use a fine-toothed lice comb to remove nits and any remaining lice. It’s best to do this on damp hair, section by section.
  4. Wash Bedding and Clothing: Wash any bedding, hats, and clothing that the child has recently worn in hot water and dry on high heat to kill any remaining lice or nits.
  5. Vacuum: Vacuum furniture and carpets to remove any fallen hairs or nits.
  6. Repeat as Necessary: Some treatments require a second application a week later to ensure all lice and nits are eliminated.
  7. Prevent Reinfestation: Educate the child about avoiding head-to-head contact and sharing personal items like combs and hats.

If you have any concerns or the infestation persists, consult a healthcare professional for advice.
