Separation anxiety – How to make the school drop-off easier

Separation anxiety in children, especially during drop-off at nursery school, is common, but there are ways to ease the process.

Here are some tips that might help reduce separation anxiety:

    1. Create a Goodbye Ritual

Develop a simple, loving, and consistent routine for saying goodbye. This might include a hug, a kiss, or a special phrase. Keeping the goodbye short helps prevent prolonging the anxiety.

    2. Stay Calm and Confident

Children pick up on parents’ emotions. If you’re calm and confident during drop-off, it reassures them that they are safe and that nursery school is a good place for them.

    3. Practice Separation at Home

Gradually getting your child used to short periods of separation at home can help. You can leave them with a trusted adult for brief intervals and then slowly increase the time apart.

    4. Bring a Comfort Object

Allow your child to bring something comforting from home, like a favorite toy, blanket, or even a small family photo. This can provide a sense of security in a new environment.

    5. Establish a Predictable Routine

Having a morning routine that leads up to drop-off can create a sense of stability. Consistency in timing also helps children know what to expect, which reduces anxiety.

    6. Talk About Nursery School Positively

Encourage excitement about nursery by talking about all the fun activities, new friends, and things they will do. Focusing on the positive aspects can build anticipation rather than dread.

    7. Use Transition Techniques

Arriving early at nursery school to spend a few minutes settling in before leaving can help your child feel more comfortable. You might also work with the nursery staff to create a specific transition plan that works best for your child.

    8. Acknowledge Their Feelings

Let your child know that it’s okay to feel upset but reassure them that you’ll be back soon. Validating their emotions makes them feel understood and supported.

    9. Give It Time

Separation anxiety usually lessens with time as children adjust to their new environment. Be patient, and remember that this phase is normal.

Each child is different, so you may need to try a few approaches to see what works best for yours.
