World Book Day

World Book Day encourages children to read. At Happy Hands Montessori Nursery School in Willesden, the kids shared their favourite book.
The nursery was filled with excitement as the children arrived dressed as their favourite book characters, proudly carrying the stories they love most.
To make the day even more special, one of our parents shared a storytime in both English and her home language, Hungarian, giving the children a magical experience of storytelling across cultures.
This month, our focus stories are The Rainbow Fish and Elmer. As part of the World Book Day celebrations, another parent joined us to bake a colourful rainbow cake with the children, inspired by these much-loved tales. The activity was rich in learning opportunities: the children practiced their physical and practical life skills through pouring, measuring, stirring, squeezing, and carefully using spoons.
They delighted in choosing the food colouring for each layer, patiently took turns, and learned to share ingredients and tools.
The room buzzed with conversations about rainbows, and the children eagerly recalled parts of the Rainbow Fish and Elmer stories while they worked. They also explored early maths through weighing and measuring.
When the cake was finally baked, their faces lit up with pride at what they had created—before, of course, enjoying the delicious reward of tasting it together!
